We are applauding our four year old learner who started writing numbers with paper and pencil this week! Jaiveen joined St. Peter’s Montessori School when he was 3 years old. Since then we’ve seen him bloom by leaps and bounds. His young mind is curious and thirsty for knowledge. Our guides are trained to observe each child intently and introduce new concepts when queues are present. With Montessori, the foundation for this exercise is built early on in the Nido classroom where young toddlers learn to properly hold utensils in preparation for later holding a pencil. Each activity is carefully thought out and planned. Guides in each classroom work together to prepare a child for the next advancement in learning. In this case Jaiveen and his Lead Guide, Ms. Kathy, have developed a relationship of communication that enables Ms. Kathy to identify the subtle queues and creates an environment of comfort and security for Jaiveen to try new things. This morning we walked into our primary classroom and caught the sweetest moment where one of our 3 year olds, not even quite 3 ft. tall, was using the basin to wash, rinse and place snack mats on a drying rack. She was dressed in an apron and using a brush to clean the last mat. Normally an image like this is seen after an adult has come through to clean up after littles. In our classrooms children are taught practical life skills that build their confidence and sense of purpose. Yet today watching this sweet child cleaning her classmates mats filled my heart with the compassion she was experiencing and the blessing that comes from loving your neighbors! Today at St. Peter’s Montessori School we held our annual celebration for International Day of Peace. Students dressed in white to symbolize solidarity, and carried world flags while walking to our labyrinth, where we sang songs of peace. Inside our classrooms we shared items from different countries and delighted in our rich diversity! We hope the day will live on in the hearts of our wonderful students.
